Over the past 6 months or so, my 220CDi has dropped out of gear on 2 occasions when accelerating. - Quite disturbing!

Once was at about 60mph when accelerating up a steep hill, and the other was at about 20mph when accelerating after leaving a roundabout.

Each time, once the car slows, drive is engaged again and everything seems fine again. But it leaves me without confidence of accelerating in case it happens again, - with perhaps disasterous consequenses.

Is this a known issue? Selector valve or low fluid level?

I get occasional limp home mode - seemingly when the car is hot and running in heavy traffic around town. I don't know if these 2 problems are linked.

For many here the issue of dropping out of gear has been resolved by checking the ATF levels. As for "limp home" others are sure to reply with pointers on where to go next.

Its low on fluid and the pump loses the pressure when doing extreme moves as the fluid what is left goes to one end of the sump. Do check for any leaks

i had this problem on my 1999 W208 CLK 320...... at the time i never checked the level but got the ATF changed and it never happened again. as others have said it is probably low level.
