Hi I'm new to this forum and wondered if any one can help me,year 2000 (w202) c200 estate 4 cylinder petrol. If you drive the car hard, and accelerate from say 40mph using kick down in the auto box all i get is an increase in rpm with no noticble increase in speed, after this the engine then runs rough which i guess is limp mode, if you stop and turn the car off and re-start its fine, now for the weird bit, if you use the box as a manual and drop from drive into third, accelerate select fourth and finally drive (fifth) its pretty well ok and performs normally although it does seem to lack power, but thats hard to tell as my last car a Volvo was considerable more powerful. The only thing i have done so far is replace the oxygen sensor just before the cat as it was indicated to me that may be part of the problem, i have also been told it could be the air flow meter. The car does not overheat or bring up any warning lights. All sugestions greatfully received.

If you select reverse gear does the car take 4 or more seconds to engage reverse? if so it sounds like the air flow meter at fault, need diags really to see whats going on with the car.
Air flow car be unplugged, it will either stall the engine or run as rough but drive better.
If local to cambs I can put it on diags tomorrow for you.

Meet with Jim this this morning, short test showed the airmass sensor was u/s, and the gear box oil was very overdue a change!!
