Just won a dipstick for my autobox on flea-bay. What sort of ATF can I use in my auto box on the W208 CLK (430) & the ML-270 CDI ? Are the filter & gasket a MB only job, or can I get them elsewhere ??

Many thanks Malc, I did have a read at this before, but was hoping for a specific recomendation for a brand of oil. Do you know where I can get the filter & gasket (other than direct from MB).
:)

Oils and fluids are specific on modern cars and form part of the original design, you have the Shell and MB fluid listed.

The filter is MB only, also MB engine filters are some of the best in the world

Hi,
I hate to contradict Malcolm but i think Gearbox filters are now available from Euro car parts together with new Gearbox sump gaskets.
Fluid for auto gearboxes i,m very suspicious of as their seems so many different grades of the same oil, and confusing and conflicting application information. For this reason and the fact i did,nt have dipstick, i decided to get Olly (BlackC55) to do it, (he will only use genuine MB oil).
You could try a search on here for Opie Oils as they offer forum members a discount and seem to be quit competative too.

.

Thanks Andy, I did not know that, but for the difference in cost surely it should be a genuine MB filter. the same goes for the fluid, you cant get it wrong from MB

I have priced up the stuff from my local MB dealer, and the filter / gasket are only about £7 each - not bad. Unfortunately the ATF is £10 a L, and I need to get 8L.

I tried Opie oils, which is why I wanted to check with you guys as they list 3 different manufacturers with very different prices.

Cheers,
Mark

Given you're probably only going to change the oil once or twice while you have the car I would stick with MB oil. I know when I changed mine the price differential wasn't enough to bother. Also, at the time, I wasn't convinced that there was an aftermarket brand that was up to spec. Not quite like engine oil every 10,000+ miles where the costs can add up over time.

Amo,

Just had my ATF, filter and connector changed in my 1999 SL320 at 92,000 miles at my local Indy. The cost was reasonable and the difference in gearbox perfomance, noticable.
My advice would be get yourself a good Indy Merc guy and let them do the job. It will pay in the long term.

40-50K miles is the time recommended these days
