Would worn ball joints and wishbone bushes cause a harsh gear change?

No, they are steering related.

I dont know what car you have. from about 97 onwards the gearboxes were sealed for life, this policy has now been dropped and gear box oil and the filter should be changed at 60k. Every one that has done this has reported very smooth gaer changes.
change the oil and filter.

You could ask, they amy say sealed for life still and as yours does not have a drain plug for the torque converter only 4ltrs can be changed. I had mine done but honestly cannot feel a difference. Having said that it was changing perfectly before the change.
As you have the service plus, you could say that the changes are not as expected and ask them to change the ATF.

mountings would cause harsh thud type gear changes.

If this transmission is the ZF type, you have a big headache. Better you have it check by a dealer. changing the oil and filter will not help. The type of trans is marked on the side of the box.

it's in for a service on Thursday and the "lumpy" gear changes are on the list. I don't really expect them to do anything about it but it's worth asking. Given how many things are on the list I'm not sure they'll get round to it.

B Service
Mot
Lumpy Idle
Violent gear changes
Radio's broke
Remote locking's broke
Cruise control/speed limiter cutting out

etc:(

Omni,

I had problems with my locking and cruise control which was sorted by replacing the car's battery. It wasn't an obvious problem that the battery was goosed but all my electrical gremlins went away as soon as it was replaced.
