My 1994 320CE auto has developed a problem, after starting from cold and letting it warm up for a minute or two the car will not change gear for another couple of minutes driving, once it changes gear it performs normally.Anybody any suggestions before I take it to the garage?

I would say just a sticky valve on that box, an easy job to do

sticky box

yes as television, possibly old dirty oil, high viscous state with contamination making valves stick first thing, good box/ converter drain + oil/filter may cure it!

I would suggest not at all what's been said.

Look in your manual and you will see the system is designed to be like your car is behaving.

Are you saying that things have recently changed ?

It maybe the higher ambient temps are having an affect on the change up delay system.

dodgy changes!

Hi are you saying that as the w210 it holds on to lower gears to warm up the cat from cold. i wasnt aware that those gearboxes ( if its 4 speed ) had any electronics at all going anyware, unless its got a 722.6 5 speed then you are correct. regards rap.

Yes, there is a gear change delay to ensure cat gets hot in quickest time.

The 93 onwards 124 E320 vehicles are all electronic with a main engine computer that controls both fuel and ignition in one integrated unit.

Called HFM it was the most advanced engine configuration that Mercedes made at the time.

Also fitted to SL 320 and S class 320; and then went onto the 210 E class when they were introduced later.

gearboxes

Hi david I agree with you, but my mate has a 1995 sl320 with a 4 speed box apparently 5 speed was an option on some models from 1993 up to 1995 including the late 1995 w210 so it still could be a 4 speed 320 coupe as its a 1994 car, it would be nice to find out! perhaps he will tell us , all the best rap

as per mine it IS the older design auto box (non electronic) BUT it still has the delay done via timer/vacuum controlled solenoid switch to hold second.

If you give it clout on gas pedal, you can force it to change up when engine reaches high rev range.

Thanks to everyone for the advice, had fluid in gearbox and torque changed along with filters, But no different. The problem has developed recently after behaving normally,so maybe it is something to do with the warmer weather. Will keep you posted with further developments.
Thanks

Thanks for all the advice, Fluid and filters changed, but no difference, the problem did seem to start with the hot weather,so maybe that is the reason,
Will keep you posted of any further developments.
