Auto gear selection

Hi,
I have a ML 270 CDI AUTO......When I move the gear lever from park to rev the car goes in ok and R shows on dash,if I then move the lever to N the g/box selects N but R remains on the dash and engine will not rev. If I put the lever into D, N comes up on the dash and eng revs and tries to pull away in 2nd or 3rd. If I put lever into D and wait approx 10 secs the N on the dash changes to D and car pulls away in 1st.
The tiptronic has not worked for some months.

Does anyone have any ideas??

The selector rod is out of adjustment or something loose on the rod,,I will see if I have anything on this
