auto gearbox not selecting gears

hi all, I have a c240 sport auto and the gearbox either sticks in gear or drops out of gear and I have to keep stopping to switch engine off to get the gear box to even select a gear, then on driving does not go through the gears smoothly and then sticks in any gear it likes ???? grrrrr anyone got any ideas pleeeeease.... many thanks

If its dropping the drive as you are going along, then theres a good chance that the box is shot, other things could be electric plate, valve body, pilot bush leaking oil into the box ECU, you need to get the fault codes read! could even just be low on oil, so many things which are a poss!!

As Cole could be very low on fluid as the pilot bush is leaking

Start with the simple stick head or small person underneath even a mirror and look for leak.
