I've just had the gearbox oil changed in my '98 W202 180. The cost was £149, done at my local dealer. They reported no problems after inspecting the old oil and the difference is fantastic. The gearchanges are noticably smoother in fact it's hard to tell when the car changes gear except for looking at the rev counter! I can thoroughly recommend changing the oil if it has not been done for a while. My car hs 95,000 on the clock and this was the first gearbox oil change. Money well spent I think. Now to get the rust done, my dealer says the car is out of warranty so they will not repair it. I will persevere though!

When in 1998 is the crucial thing. The 30 year rust guarantee replaced the earlier 8 year one on cars first registed from October 1998 onwards. Check your papers. Obviously helps if you have full MBSH, though sometimes they will help even if the record is a bit patchy.
