hello i have recently brought a 99 e300td which i have notice has a problem when you accelerate it feels like the clutch is slipping even though its a auto if you put your foot down to over take someone it feels like it changes down revs a lot but does not gain speed if you relase your foot off the pedal a bit it will pick up speed but very slowly it gives all the simptons of a slipping clutch of a manual but its a auto when i brought this car it had been parked up for a long time and has covered nearly 200,000 miles in its life please help as this is my first mb and i really like it

My SLK230 with 80000 on the clock has developed the same problem, revs. up and no drive, then picks up the gears, just like a slipping clutch on a manual. Put it into an auto transmission specialist today to have it checked and serviced - no such luck! phoned me back later today and advised that transmission requires re-manufacture (not repair ) at a cost of £1,945:shock:
Don't have many options so will have to have it done

Always, the first thing to do is check for correct oil level, there are clutches inside an automatic transmission so your description of slipping like a manual clutch is partially correct, if you are lucky and the problem is due to a low oil caused by maybe a leakage or through the vacuum modulator, filling to the correct level should get it working again, however if the car has been driven for a considerable time on a low oil level the clutches will be damaged and will need replacing.

Totally agree with Wellington. Level is your first check.

Busby - get a second opinion or check the level yourself. Could save yourself nearly 2k
