Hello all. I’m new to here so please bare with me! I have a C180 1997 classic. My problems started when the key fob started to work only intermittently (the triangular shape one) then the gearbox played up. Now the key will not work at all. In short I was told I need a new key fob (about £200 or more) plus the torque converter is faulty. As the car is not really worth repairing given it’s body condition also, I bought another one and am now trying to scrap this one. The problem I have is that no lorry can get to my drive to pick it up! The car is stuck in park plus the steering lock was on, I have now fixed the steering lock problem by (and I know this is going to make a lot of you scream!) hammering it off with a hammer and crowbar! BUT I still have the problem of the car stuck in PARK! Does anybody have any ideas how I can force it out of park so as I can move it out of my drive and have it at last picked up? Obviously I have no issue breaking things to get it out of park! (Clearly!)
Thanks all.
A desperately wife harassed man!

Push the release button at the side of the gear stick and move it into neutral. Do you have the manual for it - it's in there.

Thanks for the reply but I have no release button on the side of the gearstick? Oh, and there's nothing about it at all in the manual. :-/
Cheers.

Nothing under the flap thing that covers the slot at the bottom of the stick - you have to push it down with a rod of some sort roughly pencil sized? That's where mine is - a 320CDI - I thought they all had them, but could be wrong.

Thanks again but no there's nothing, either I am a complete idiot, (which in all honesty many would agree with!) or I am saying the completely wrong model! It says 1997 in the logbook and on the car it's R reg and a C180 classic? A few people have said similar to what you're saying but I can't see anything remotely like it? Very odd and VERY frustrating!!
Cheers.

Hang on - I'll try to take a snap...

Won't upload. Switch to manual mode.

Left hand side where it says 1,2 D etc, at the bottom of the strip with the numbers and letters on below D, there should be a join in the plastic. The bottom bit is a "flap", nearest the back seat. You should be able to push a rod down there (screwdriver etc) and release the lock. PM me your email and I'll send the photo if that doesn't make sense.

Yeah it's a shame really but the torque converter is going plus the smart key fob is kaput. The age of the car just doesn't warrant a repair unfortunately real shame It's been the most reliable car I've ever had actually. all I did the last few years was oil pads and tyres. Still I have got another one now. Oh and you should see what a mess I made of the steering lock with a hammer and crowbar!
Thinking of doing the same with the gearbox now! Guess I could disconnect the prop shaft if I really have to?
