Auto transmission

[Worried by auction]

Hey folks

Looking for a bit of advice - bought a T plate E300 TD Avantgard with an automatic transmission at an auction a week ago and the engine has started making a noise as the transmission tries to change down the gears.

Anyone any ideas about what this is and how much it will cost to fix?

Any indies or Mb dealers near you have the car checked on a star diagnostic machine it may just need resetting , also have the oil level checked in the autobox .. those are the cheapest and first steps to take, what mileage do u have

I have a full service history and the car has done 106,000 miles. MOT'd last month.

and the noise is a low rumble when the auto transmission is trying to shift down the gears - its OK on semi automatic.

And its booked in for next week to the local merc dealer - just worried about driving it in the meantime

Do not quite follow this ,,how do you mean semi auto mode

On the gear shifter there are selection options from 1st to 4th gear and the prob doesn't seem to happen when I use this rather than put the gearbox into drive. the noise only happens in drive when slowing down

I thinking that this could be engine mounts,, a well known fault at that mileage that throws the drive chain out of line

IIRC the mounts are about £50ish each. It would take an hour to do them both.

If that is the problem (does your steering wheel vibrate excessively at idle?) then change the gearbox mount at the same time.

Hey guys

Took the car to the dealer and was told that I needed a new gearbox and torque convereter and that it would cost £1,900 for the gearbox alone. Phoned a guy near me in Glasgow that television gave his name to another guy and I'll try him next week.

Help please!!!!!!

Might be why the car was at auction in the 1st place. The early of those boxes had a tendency to wear the bush between the input and output shafts, so making it rotate like a skipping rope, if so a new box needed. Dont no of thats ur prob tho. Doubt if you need a toque convertor.

I wouldn't trust the dealer tbh.
