i can shift into drive fine, reverse, neutral and park all with no problems. if i move it from drive to 4th i can shift down to 3rd but not down to 2nd or 1st. and it doesn't change up at all. i'm pretty sure it is first i am stuck in.

assuming it is a 722.6 auto transmission?

are you sure its stuck in 1st gear, its probably stuck in 2nd (not easy to tell the difference)

if its stuck in 2nd its gone into the gearbox damage protection version of limp home mode (ie the ETC computer then does nothing).

so the ETC computer and electroplate etc are suspect.

i'm not sure of anything anymore after 2 weeks of thinking i had a w124!!:)

i wouldn't say it was 100% stuck in 1st it certainly feels like first but its a quick so i'm out of that gear pretty quickly, as for which box again not 100% sure it has P,N,D and then you can push over to select 4,3,2,1 not sure if that helps also has a W/S button which i think is winter or standard

i was under the impression that all the AMG versions were a 5 speed box, anyway i can tell, can;t say i have ever counted the shifts up when driving

sounds like a 5 speed tiptronic to me.

you are saying that you can change some gears by the displayed gear number but in actual fact it only runs in a single forward gear that you think is 1st yes??

i agree with malcolm in that the fault is probably no worse than the speed plate (electro plate) - if that's any comfort.

yup i can basically put into drive and move, reverse again fine and the car moves, but it wo't change up a gear at all, even if i move it into 4th or 3rd manually nothing change.

It sounds like the ETC computer has gone into damage protecting limp home (assuming its not the ETC computer that's faulty)

Either way the gearbox has no electronic control and defaults to mechanical only control via the gear selector lever.

When you select drive the gearbox goes into only one gear without any changes (actually it is 2nd and you should have a top speed of about 30 plus mph)

If this occured suddenly from 100% working to single gear only it maybe relatively good news.

As said its probably :-

The electroplate inside gearbox
The connector/wiring from ETC computer to transmission box
The ETC computer

Suggest you get error codes read by STAR machine to confirm.

mossco,

OK that's good.

Suggest you read up on 722.6 auto transmission (there are other threads here and elsewhere) get to know a bit about it before you go near garage to avoid possible rip off of putting in a new/recon gearbox without checking.

There are two limp home modes that can occur because of gearbox problems either way because yours happened so suddenly suggests it is an electrical/electronic fault.

The electroplate is a favourite because there are two rotation sensors on it that sometimes fail.

Hope gets sorted out without too much unexpected finance!

I don't think it will be that bad (famous last words) nor is it really any reflection on MB.

Could be fixed in a day!
