electro plate 300 pounds - still a rip off if its just a hall effect sensor worth a few quid! apparently the hall effect sensors are moulded into the electro plate?

Take the hall sensor built into my struts, a recall free job in the USA but I pay £1000 for a part that has lousy soldering inside and I could have done nothing to have caused the fault

ok just to give you an update on this derrick wells have had the car today and re-set the fault it now runs fine again and the fault hasn't come back with them doing various tests on it they have said it could be the electro speed plate, but have suggested running it for a while to see if the problem comes back. if it returns i will get the speed plate done , thanks for all the help and advise!, if the problem returns i will be sure to post it on here!

Well just to update again the merc is back in limp mode so is going in tomorrow for the electro plate work most of you predicted it would be, so hopefully this will sort the problem!

looks like i could be getting a company car in the next 6 weeks so i may have to consider the future of the merc anyway which is a bit sad.

derek wells could tell you the fault code that's logged, it only takes one electrical bad contact to a solenoid, one bad contact to the speed sensors or a bad speed sensor to lock the transmission computer and put the car into 2nd gear limp mode

don't loose faith in the car, the fault (although not cheap to fix) is probably trivial in nature - when you consider how the working gearbox can rip up and down through five gears so effortlessly

i'm not fussed to be honest its not going to be a terrible bill i'm happy in a way that the fault was shown up to be the plate. just a shame that if my role changes at work which looks very likely then i just won't have any need for the car so i'd have to sell.

considering i flew to scotland to drive it back to suffolk would be sad after owning it for such a short period of time

Similar Problem CLK 430

I have a similar transmission problem on my 2000 w208 clk430 (wdb208) and hoping for some guidance.
Initially the car was intermittently sticking in park but I was able to manually bypass ( with the ball pen inserted behind D drive ) and I replaced the brake switch which I understand to be the usual culprit.
Now in a different scenario the car is stuck in 1st/2nd ? (50mph at around 4000rpm) and requires a restart to go from Drive to Reverse which makes me think it is electrical rather than mechanical. Engaging drive is now clunky but previously was silky smooth.
Oil level using the curtain wire is around 7.0cm at 80 degrees.
To complicate matters I had water in the passenger foot well from a blocked drain but the TCU looks to be dry although I am not discounting this as being at fault.
Also does anyone know of an indie in south Cumbria/North Lancs where I could limp to? I know there is an MB indie in Warrington but that's a 60 mile limp.
Many thanks in advance.
