so i have been loving the merc, until about an hour ago! was just leaving a friends house and it seems the autobox has got stuck in 1st gear, it won't change up or down, it will go into reverse and park. so i have just limped home abot 10 miles at about 30 mph!? any ideas at all what this could be?

thanks

Either low on fluid ,, do a re start and see if it goes away, or the plate may have gone down

When odd things happen Adam,,always try a re start

Do not know about gearbox but it would be good if you could change your car designation to the correct one of :

C36 W202 (It is NOT e36 W124)

It confuses people when trying to help you sort a tech problem.

The above is for a 722.6 box that came out mid 1996

Sorry, no dip stick,, but when hot 80c you can use a length of curtain wire where it should be 5.6 cm up the wire,,a stiff piece of electrical cable will do the same job

For what you are doing and the rough check that you need to make it is hardly worth while at this stage , as long as you have fluid somewhere near right this is all you need to know.

I think that it will be the speed plate that will have to be replaced

Are you, sure it stuck in 1st and not 2nd? Can you shift the lever from drive to reverse or do you have to turn off engine first? May net be too bad, this happens the 5 speed, I had it and it did not break the bank. The problem was not in the transmission itself. However at first it was intermittent.
