The rotating drums instead of being clear or the top of the fluid would be partially immersed in it and whip it up into a froth and it would pour out through the breather onto the road
thanks wellington. The problem therefore cannot be overfill.(the box had the fluid changed recently) The car is still being unpredictable when changing up gears. It appears to struggle slightly to change up then it goes into what I think could be safe mode. I then stop the car, switch off the engine, restart it and the problem is sorted. at least for a short time then the whole procedure is repeated. The maf on the car was replaced around 10 months ago and all was well untill the gearbox oil was changed. The car is a c 200 petrol, w reg 202 model with 160000 on the clock.
All suggestions appreciated
This fault was common around1999-2001 and we never knew an answer for sure, someone posted a couple of months back with the reason, but I cant remember what it was.
Some cars only do it now and then, my 129 did. I have a feeling it was something to do with the gearbox ECU plug, this is a known MB fault and the 2 end connections are the CAN wires,,if the CAN signal gets lost, then the car does not know what to do and locks up for safety
I think you need to have it read for fault codes, could have a broken modulator spring in the valve body but there would not be a definitive fault code for it, it would show something else
