Most junctions are 'give way' which surprisingly means you dont have to stop i.e. on approach to a roundabout. Majority of rear end crunches occur when car at the front hesitates then brakes to a stop at the last second. Better to correctly time speed on approach while LOOKING and then merge in traffic if its safe. Auto's great for this.
Many people cant / dont like this and and some, I have to say it , women drivers mostly see it as an opportunity for a rest and make up time.
But its really down to skilled experience. Probably why road planners block visibility on approach to make drivers stop (coz they cant then see until at the junction) which causes the queues we see daily.
Traffic lights are just a means of taking the decisions away from drivers. (great for those that cant make any).
And you should always knock it out of gear to avoid lurching even further if bumped from behind.

The first bit of your post is very good,,but you do not take it out of gear at lights, having it in gear with the foot on the barake can stop you from getting front end damage as well from the car in front,,you will not find one drivers hand book that tells you to take it out of gear at traffic lights

Oh thank you, glad you liked it.
Just my Tuppence worth.

No not if your going to move off again, I agree. Enough old codgers out there that take an hour to find a gear they like :)
but a driving examiner (a proper one)would expect it.

If sitting a while say, (level crossing) you should always take out of gear and apply the brake.
What if you passed out and the car carried on ??

Saying that, I once saw a guy literally stop his car, middle of the road, run in to a shop and run out and go. What if he had left it in gear . . . ;)
