I’ve recently bought a 2007 c class coupe 1.8 kompressor and everything was fine until today. I drove the car to London and on the way back the gear box got stuck in 2nd gear ( I think ) and it would not let me select any of manual or winter modes either. I stopped on the side of the road and switched the engine off and on again and it started to change gears again and let me go thru the gearbox modes so I continued my drive towards Cambridge. After around 20-30 miles I tried to go on the manual mode and again it won’t let me do anything and this time the gearbox was not changing down so I drove like that until I got home in what I think was the 5th gear. I parked the car and when I restarted the engine everything was fine again. Anyone had this issue before?

Could be oil wicking into the seal at an electrical connector at the gbox, an overlooked item when the gbox is serviced and should be a service item as part of the process.

When was the gbox last serviced, if never now is the time, every 37.5 k miles

The car is detecting a fault condition and the gearbox is going into ‘limp’ mode.
It really needs diagnosing by someone who knows what they are doing e.g. a Mercedes specialist independent or a dealer.
It is possibly something simple like a leaking pilot bush, low fluid etc.
If not though a gearbox rebuild is expensive.

^ +1 typical electroplate symptoms the speed sensor malfunctions so the gearbox doesn’t know whIch gear to select so sticks in second

+2 , eventually it will not clear with a restart and you are left with reverse and second gear until then it can stick in 3-4 or 5th and sometimes not want to change gear unless you back off throttle a bit.
As mentioned above usually conductor plate and this was the case with my old 97 w210 which was down to 2nd and reverse only a new plate was fitted and fault codes cleared and all ok… it will not work until fault codes are removed so you will still be stuck in second gear if its gone full fault mode, if its still resetting on another engine start up it may drive ok ? but I am not sure of that

The gearbox oil was replaced at around 65000 miles according to the service history and is now at 123000 miles. I’ve just ordered a transmission oil dipstick to check the oil level.

Does anyone know an mb specialist in Cambridgeshire or around ? Im in Huntingdon and I would really want to give this car a try as it’s a very nice car and it has the full service history documented with receipts too.

I’ve been told that it might me something simple as the oil might be old and probably when it was replaced it was done with a cheap one and therefore after driving in traffic oil hot on a higher temp and got too thin?

At the moment it’s driving fine after restarting engine. Although I didn’t tried to drive the car today as I don’t want to destroy anything.

Second time it got stuck in the 5th gear and it won’t let me change the gearbox mode ( C, S , M )

Dreaded electro plate? Get the codes read using MB STAR.
I don’t have any lights on the dash. Tried to read codes with a generic diag tool but didn’t show anything. It might be that my tool can’t read gearbox.

I'm pretty sure that the posters on here have your best interests at heart, and are being helpful as always , but get it scanned for stored / active fault codes is the only way to pinpoint the problem and get a solution. Trying this and that is like poking around in the dark, and making matters worse. For sure, its not going to improve by itself.....

Welwyn Mercs, or Alex Crowe would be my suggestions.

A generic code reader wil only read a small subset of engine codes and won't even look at the gearbox or any other modules.
You need a code reader that is specifically capable of reading modules in your car (Autel, Launch, iCarsoft or the gold standard Star for example).

I will try this places and see what I can get. Thank you!

Speed sensor failure in the gearbox electroplate is a very common issue with the 722.6 gearbox and does throw up a code so either STAR or Icarsoft should confirm this - my S210 did exactly the same as yours @ 60k miles.
You must get the codes read before spending money on an oil and filter change or you will have to repeat that spend to fit an electroplate.

Stewart and Wisbey nearly Ely 01353665343

My S211 had this same problem, a new conductor plate sorted it. After this was replaced the car had to be rescanned.
