So a little update. Mercedes have diagnosed the problem as being the torque converter and have quoted a meaty £2,238.60 (including VAT)! So I’ve picked the car up as there’s no way I’m paying that! Found a local gearbox specialist who informs me that the torque converter can be reconditioned, and would charge me £400. I have read elsewhere of other people who have gone down the route of reconditioning the torque converters rather than replacing them. Just wondering based on your expertise, is that the best way to go? Many thanks as ever!

Several people on here swear by JPAT for reconditioned torque convertors.

Would that repair not come under your warranty?

I believe you said the car is 5 months old.

If I read that correctly it’s worthwhile going back to the selling dealer to see what can be done.

£400 for a reconditioning sounds pretty good so long as they are a decent company who know what they are doing.

Unfortunately the warranty company are claiming it to be a wear and tear item so won’t cover it. I’ve realised now why these warranties are worthless! I also purchased the car from an independent dealer in Loughborough, so it’s more of a headache trying to go back to them. Would you say reconditioning does the job? Many of my local garages have said they send automatic gearbox issues to this particular garage hence the reason why I’m using them. I’ve never really used them before though.

How the hell is a torque converter a wear and tear item?
Is the whole automatic gearbox a wear and tear item as well since the only things that can wear in a TC are also present in the gearbox?

I'd be arguing the point with the warranty company and suggesting a discussion with the ombudsman....

^^ Agreed.

And I’m not sure I would rely on what a Mercedes Dealer says without getting a second opinion from a Mecerdes Indie with Star. You shouldn’t have this sort of problem at 76k miles surely?

Check, check, check and quadruple check warranties, as you say some are worthless!

As per other posters I would not be accepting that this is a wear and tear item and would be going straight back to the warranty company to demand they rethink their stance.

I cannot believe that any independent arbiter would take their side, stick by your guns and I believe and hope it will come out in your favour.

76000 miles and it's a wear item...?
My s210 is on the original TC and has done 140k miles and still runs fine
My r129 is on 135k miles and still runs fine.
My r230 is on 92k miles and still runs fine.
All are on the original TC. I'd definitely be having words with the warranty company.
