You may be the first person to ever say thatNever wished I lived in Reading as much as I do now!
So a little update. Mercedes have diagnosed the problem as being the torque converter and have quoted a meaty £2,238.60 (including VAT)! So I’ve picked the car up as there’s no way I’m paying that! Found a local gearbox specialist who informs me that the torque converter can be reconditioned, and would charge me £400. I have read elsewhere of other people who have gone down the route of reconditioning the torque converters rather than replacing them. Just wondering based on your expertise, is that the best way to go? Many thanks as ever!
Would that repair not come under your warranty?
I believe you said the car is 5 months old.
If I read that correctly it’s worthwhile going back to the selling dealer to see what can be done.
£400 for a reconditioning sounds pretty good so long as they are a decent company who know what they are doing.

^^ Agreed. How the hell is a torque converter a wear and tear item?
Is the whole automatic gearbox a wear and tear item as well since the only things that can wear in a TC are also present in the gearbox?
I'd be arguing the point with the warranty company and suggesting a discussion with the ombudsman....
