Last year I bought the following modules off ebay –

FULLY AUTOMATED ROOF OPERATION
SL / R129 "one touch" Module

Functions:
The installation of this module means that the roof switch no longer has to be held until the roof is completely open or closed. The roof switch need only be touched briefly (1 sec) and the module extends the operation so that the roof opens or closes fully automatically. The automatic operation of the roof can be stopped at any time by pressing the button again.

Also:
SL / R129 30mph (50Km/h) Module

Functions:
If the module is installed, the roof of your SL can be opened / closed while driving up to a speed of 30mph.
Also:
SL / R129 OEM Keyfob Module
Functions:
If the module is installed, the roof of your SL can be opened / closed from the original Mercedes remote with 3 clicks.

After fitting they worked OK for a while and then the roof stopped working. The modules were removed and the roof worked again. The modules were sent back and replaced after discovering that one of them had shorted.

Recently, whilst the replacement modules were fitted the roll over bar went up and will not go down which means the roof will not operate.

I would be interested to learn whether anyone has had similar experiences after fitting these or similar modules.

Have you tried to reset it by keeping you finger on the roll bar down button for ½min in key 2

I've just tried re-setting as you suggested.

I could hear the motor turning but the roll over bar did not budge.

I had a similar problem when I first bought it and that was down to a fault in one of the electronic clamps holding the roof bow in position.

Looks like another trip to the local MB dealer.

Have you tried it both ways, it says in the handbook hold it until it engages

I have a problem with I'm told "the roof module control" symptoms are the Red roof release light is on all the time, the roll bar switch light is on all the time. I am trying to source a new or working module, any ideas? Its a 1998 SL500 R129.
thanks Rob
