It should be changed every 30 to 40,000 miles. It is probably long overdue if you have no record of it having been done.

As Mike above, this was never part of any service, and indie will change it all for around £165

Wondering would it be ok to use regular transmission oil such as castorl oppossed to genuine Mercedes Benz fluid? The Mercedes Benz fluid is over 3 times the price so I am wondering is there any difference which would affect the box?

Suggest you stick with the MB oil or you may knacker your box. Cost of a recon box considerably more than the difference in the oil price.

I've been using Shell ATF with success in my older cars.
I take it if they're doing a proper job they will change the converter fluid at the same time....hence the need for sump gasket in the costing?

The sump coming off does not help on the draining out of the old fluid,,the cooler pipe will have to be disconnected and the engine spun for a few seconds to clear the torque converter

I know this will provoke a storm but here's the Merc list of approved MB236.14 ATF (the MB part number lists at £11-73 per litre):

The Max oil you will remove, even after removing the cooler pipes and spinning the engine, will be 4.5 litres unless you have a torque convertor drain plug (as malcolm advises you don't). The 7226 box takes about 7 litres of MB oil on the initial fill only, don't buy 7 litres as you will be have 2.5 litres left over. I would advise that you stick with MB oil (as previously advised) or you may live to regret your money saving descision.

The MB-branded part number is in the list I posted above - A 001 989 68 03 @ £11-73 per litre at list.

The two companies who supply MB are also in the list! (MB don't manufacture ATF.....).

Trivial fluid cost anyway when factored over 37,500 miles/60,000Km.

MB do it by putting 3 liters more in and then spinning the engine, then finish off by topping up with about 3 liters
