I have a 1997 c class 250 td with 119K on the clock. I have taken advice from this forum and had the ATF fluid changed by an Autoomatic Gearbox Specialist. He advises that I need to fit an auxiliary ATF cooler as I use the car for towing. Can anybody tell me if this is adviseable or is he looking for extra work.

oil cooler

Malcomb is right you should have cooler in the radiator that will drop excess box temps down to engine temp, so as long as the engine is running correctly with good coolant and temps and the fan cuts in etc ,and you are not towing 3 ton horse boxes across egypt! you will be ok. so its normal kerb weight vans around yorkshire etc! all the best.

ATF cooler

Thank you and Malcom. The van I am towing is within the 85% range for weight so is not exceptionally heavy. I got the impression he was looking for extra work as when I asked him why it needed one he didn't really answer. Said it was his preference to fit one on every automatic.
