On my trip to england, I came across 'average speed cameras' in some of the road works.

I'm heading down there again this weekend and have now worked out how to deal with them...

Head for the inside lane and note the car you are alongside as you hit the first camera. Drop to 20 mph so that cars start moving out to the other lane. Accelertate back up to the car you should be level with so that people start switching lanes again. Slow down to 20...

You are worse than me, and I am bad enough.

You don't have to come south for average speed cameras they have been in the road works on the M74 for awhile. Not fully licensed/type approved as yet though.
The best/worst are on the M42 on the gantries. Activated by transducers in the road surface.

I quite like these - they mean that if you get stuck (as you almost certainly will) behind a muppet doing 50 for a bit, you can have a quick 90mph blast to make your average back up to 70, with complete impunity! Just reset the trip computer everytime you pass a gantry and it will tell you how far you can push it until the next one!

fyi the M42 cameras are clearly visible on the gantries

Agreed you can see them very easily, the road angel goes nuts along the M42 now. Although radar & Laser detectors have nothing to pick up.
As for M74 they may have taken the cameras down as they were on blue posts on the left hand side with cameras covering both lanes. Same type used in Nottinghamshire

hi chaps. i presume you mean the M42 cameras from nec down to M40 split. Have to turn both my detectors off cos they dont shut up. have to tell you though my beltronics 550 radar det picks them all up so they must have some radar operations. Just off subject when we have spent all our hard earned on fines and assorted taxes will we die of freezing in this current global warming or drown in the current drought. Get your wallets out i can feel some more taxes on the way.

'Average speed cameras'? They must be better than average otherwise they wouldn't work properly.

could someone design a LCD front number plate that we could scramble "when we are on a track day of course" that would give the ASC Computers something to think about

I thought about this a couple of years ago. Technically possible the main problem would be that it would be too easy for the Police to spot it. You used to be able to buy flip up plates for bikes. Again very easy to identify.
Easier option is a bike rack on the back and a broken plate on the front, or cloned plates.

Or drive within the speed limit. It's not as if cameras are difficult to spot afterall.

well since the road works on the M74 with ASC are two minutes from my home i have got that bit figured out

However being old enuf to remember driving at 150MPH on cross ply tyres and first generation dunlop disc brakes which were 'interesting' at best i find it a bit strange and rather sad - that now we have really safe cars - compaired to then - we are limited to 70 MPH ALL THE TIME on our Motorways IF we want to stay legal. OWELL:rolleyes:  :(

I suppose the legal alternative would be to buy a car abroad and keep it on the foreign plates. As long as you keep going back you should be able to keep the plates. An engineer I knew ran a French registered car for years that way.
If you put foreign plates on your car ANPR would not pick it up.
I was watching a TV show last night on Cheshire Police. Their ANPR car had Fred Flintstone shouting 'Yabba Dabba Doo' when the ANPR computer had a untaxed vehicle hit.

I'm heading South through there tomorrow. I think going North may be better for driving at variable speeds as a lot of people want the inside lane to go to Edinburgh (the daft way).

So, 20mph for the first bit and force everybody to the outside lane. Accelerate to 60mph and change to the outside lane. Then drop down to 20mph again. That should get me a dedication from Sally Traffic.

You don't need to use your computer to work out your speed, just take note of the cars that are around you when you hit the first camera.

Nottingham if full of these average speed cameras now,
Although i recall from thier launch, it doesnt matter if you slow down between one set then speed up along another they will have realised that whilst speeding over the second set you will be speeding and therfore recieve a ticket.
This is not from my experience but from what i recall they said during thier launch.
In all they are very good as they have really calmed speed along many stretches of road aswell as making the police force alot of money.
