B class
Hi I’m a newbie so thanks for letting me join. I’d really appreciate some advice please. Have a 2013 B class from main MB dealer and had annual servicing with a care plan until last year when I planned to sell. Due to pandemic I delayed selling and took it to local garage for interim service and mot. 70k mileage and only done 1000k since service. Comment was intermittent squeak noise from auxiliary belt tensioner but told nothing to worry about. Drove home and management light came on. Back to garage x2 told glow plug issue so got all 4 replaced.
Driving to work last week sudden noise from engine. Pulled over, lost power and local towed me to nearest garage. Noted aux belt worn on one side with frayed bits which got sucked into the engine.
Garage have assessed and damage looks severe. Option’s
1. Pay for labour to look further into engine damage ( hours of labour costs only to be told it can’t be fixed)
2. Quoted 4K to put in a reconditioned engine
3. Send to knackers yard for scrap value
Has anyone had a similar issue and I would appreciate any advice as I need a car to get to work (garage have kindly loaned me one for a few days). TIA

Welcome to the forum Trishelon.

Has the car been taken to a Mercedes specialist?
Without knowing anything about your garage, I would insist a Mercedes specialist examines the car before going ahead with any work.
I would question how any fragmented aux belt has been "dragged into the engine". I smell a rat.

£4K is far too much to pay for a recon engine.
What is your location so maybe someone can point you to a good Mercedes independent workshop?

Thank for your reply. A colleague knows this garage and highly recommends. Called usual MB servicing x2 still waiting for call back. 4K is for engine and fitting etc. Cv9 postcode.

Example price of a bare petrol engine for a 2013 B class.

Plus fitting it still won't be anywhere near £4k

Wow, I knew recon would be about 2k but thought it would be as expensive to fit. They have been trying to identify the damage so suppose this also includes the work to date. Thanks AMGeed

Sorry, Coventry is way away from my part of the world.
Nearest Merc indy I know of is quite away in Nuneaton.

I would be asking how they are so sure parts of the belt have entered the engine and how it could happen.

A belt can't be sucked into an engine - that's what air filters are for

..... I've heard of 'fan'/aux belts shredding and fouling cam belts  (no idea if the B Class has a cam belt or chain ???)

Yes could the bits from the aux belt damage the timing belt? They’ve taken this off and the the teeth are way out so tried to sort this but nothing, They said there was a bolt in the crankshaft that has also damaged and something about the pulley for the time belt was affected.
Wished I knew more about mechanics!

A fan belt sucked into the engine is a new one on me as well.
When was the last belt changed it was on a MB service plan. Did MB miss the belt change interval?
I would also be speaking to the garage who did the service 1K miles before about compensation.

Yes annual MB service since I bought it until last service. First thing that I did was to contact last garage as that was the last time bonnet was opened. Long chat pictures taken by my Son were sent and they said time belt would not have been inspected as interval is 124k. My concern was aux belt and squeaking noise from tensioner and should they have advised replacement? After all I then ended up having new glow plugs as well, so obviously would have had this tensioner issue resolved as well if advised.

Welcome , interesting tale this ....
is that because I haven’t a clue what I’m talking about? TBH that’s always my fear that not knowing about engines makes me vunerable to being ripped of. I don’t think this is down to bad luck but boy am I mad that I cancelled my service plan.
