Driving the B-Class home from the supermarket yesterday and used the kickdown.... it got stuck. Scared the life out of me.

Thankfully the breaks were more powerful. And I managed to unstick the throttle with my foot.

Not entirely sure of the cause. Thinking it might be either the fact I don't use kickdown often or it might have been the floor mat getting in the way. I straightened the mat out and it seems to have been fine since.

Ever happened to anyone else here?

It would not have been the kick down switch as that would not do much, so it was the throttle sticking and this does need to be checked.

Floor mat is certainly the cheapest option. It is surprising how much stuff people can have floating about in the footwell - from spare "driving" shoes to the dog's tennis ball.

Now that you have ensured the mat is correctly placed, check the pedal for freedom to move, and free movement.

I read about a guy who had a similar experience, except that he had a thermos flask in the footwell.

When he braked the flask rolled under the brake pedal and he hit the car in front.

I though Mercs had clips (or studs) that prevented the floormats from moving, and preventing this problem.

Indeed they do have fixings, sadly MB Watford just threw my mats back in the car when they serviced it, the passenger side got caught up in the seat runners and damaged it.

Years ago I had a Datsun (remember them?) Bluebird Coupe that had a sticking throttle, had some "fun" with that I can tell you :)
It went in the dealers for the day to fix it. When I picked it up 10 yards off the forecourt it stuck again!

More than likely, when I drove straight back in they lifted the bonnet. Sitting on top of the engine was the air filter cover, a long double job for the twin carbs. It looked like it had been laying on the workshop floor and a car had run over it. I wasn't impressed and told them so. :lol

Thanks for the replies folks. Since posting this I've done another 60 miles and nothing has happened! Will be taking it to dealer in a few days to be looked at so will see what they have to say.

Yes... but that is only good if your car came with MB floor mats, which mine didn't.

Had the car checked over this afternoon. No faults found. Dealer said they've checked everything.

So fingers crossed it was just a one-off!

Remember to go for the gear lever and the brakes at the same time if it happens again, no need to panic stamp on the brakes ;) This has happened to me in the past a coupe of times in the old days of throttle cables, it seemed obvious to use clutch/gear lever rather than just the brakes like Toyota driving Americans.

New B Class, same problem...

On my way back from Croydon yesterday I noticed that the B Class had done its first 1,000 miles. To celebrate I hung back a bit, (in traffic, 30 limit) then stamped on the loud pedal for a quick roar. (Showing off to the other half!)

The pedal promptly stuck down, leaving the engine roaring away at full speed. Naturally I controlled it with the clutch and brakes. After stamping on the accelerator a couple of times it came free, and it carried on driving normally.

Worrying though, I'll mention it to the dealer next time I remember, and I'll tell him it also happened to 'Wheel'. I suspect that yours is not mechanically exactly the same as mine though, mine is a 2012 new B Class, with B200 engine and manual control.

I had the same thing happen once to my last car, a Renault Scenic, about 2 years ago, whilst it was still quite new. (Horrid things, don't buy one - ever!) On that occasion I called the RAC man, who just pulled the pedal back up with a strong pull, and it worked again.

Happened again!!!

Hi,

Driving round the madness that is the M25 today, cars everywhere, them and me juggling for position and place, partway between the M4 and the M40.

And it happened again. The accelerator pedal stuck fully down.

I realised what had happened immediately, and a couple of vigorous backheals to the carpet restored things to normal.

A little later at the Oxford services I was able to stop and take out the offending item. Things then returned to normal.

The problem would appear to be incorrect mats in my new 2012 B Class. There are two 'poppers' on the floor where the mats should be attached. This is shown clearly in the user manual. The mats when 'poppered' into place cannot move. MY mats do not have attachment places for the poppers, there is a piece of magnetic stuff in the mat and nothing else. The mat can, and does move about, moving further under the pedals, causing the problem.

I will be round to my dealer on Monday, and will attempt to make a quiet protest at their dodgy mat fixings. Considering that Linda and I could easily have been injured or killed I think I am owed an apology and a proper and immediate rectification.

I'll let you know what happens.

P.

Thats what happens when you use the main stealers when my Ml was new and under warranty the service was so poor yet so good when i was was sighning up to get a car from them i use a local specialist now and get great service because its a small team and you deal directly with the boss in the main stealers they have to many employees how act like it and dont care where as the small garages put alot more effort in

Why would they have removed/moved the mats??

SOLVED - Stuck open throttle pedal.

I don't know why a MB dealership seems to always take an age to do anything, despite loads of staff and technology, but after a pleasant cup of Earl Grey's tea, and several tasty little biscuits, and a small time waiting at the spares counter to purchase a jacket stand for the back of my seat, I finally got to have the problem sorted out.

The set of mats front and rear that were supplied with my car were the previous models' shape and fittings. (!!!)

Once they had replaced them with the 2012 shape mats it was obvious that they then fitted perfectly, particularly in the back, and that the 'poppers' for the drivers seat mat were designed for that model only and fitted properly.

Apart from establishing that they were the incorrectly supplied earlier B Class mats, I did not attempt to allocate any blame.

It was, after all, a rather pleasant and much needed cup of tea on this first properly hot day of summer 2012.
