Today after a journey my 98 250TD was idling and a rattle/noise (difficult to describe) seemed to be coming from the front of the engine.
Switched off the engine & started it again and it ran as normal & no rattles/noise, sweet as a nut!!!
Discovered that when I revved to 3500/4000 rpm and quickly removed foot from accelerator there was the noise again as the engine returned to idle.
Could it be the cooling fan - I notice it is not a fixed drive & can be rotated either way when engine is not running. It seemed to be quite secure & no play in bearing.
Any comments appreciated
