B reg merc 2.3 automatic estate, buyers advice please.

Hello all, i have seen a B-reg Mercedes 2.3 automatic estate for sale, i only really want it as a work horse, but i would like to know what to look for, its the old W123 (i think thats the name), its done 147000 miles, has some mot and tax, and lots of history. the dealer wants £395, but the rear wheel arches are badly rusted, and its showing slight rust on the bumpers and the roof rails, but apart from this it looks nice, with all the original fixtures (including the body coloured hub-caps). what problems do these car get?

Valve seals and worn timing chain are the most common engine issues.

Make sure the gearbox changes smoothly and doesn't slip.
