Hi folks,

Sorry it's been a while since I posted here. I'm looking at a new car. I used to own a B160 (old shape) and it was a great little car. I sold it a year ago basically because I needed the money at the time. I know there aren't many fans of the B-Class on this forum, but I have a soft spot for them.

Anyway, I've done a search of the forum, and I can't find any talk about the B250e - the B-Class with an electric motor.

I'm now in a position where I am looking at a new car. And I'd like to own an electric car. I only have a four mile commute to work, and the wife has a petrol car, so why not go electric? I've test driven a Nissan Leaf and BMW i3 and I've been really impressed. The Nissan Leaf has just about every gadget under the sun and a big boot, whilst the BMW i3 is FAST!

Recently I found out that Mercedes do an electric version of the B-Class, the B250e.

I haven't found any UK reviews of the B250e, but the European and American ones I have looked at seem to be generally favourable.

I've asked my local dealer to get a B250e in for a test drive, and they are hoping to get one in for the next week.

The only negative I can see is that the B250e doesn't have the option to fit a CCS socket, but for my local journies and a 120-140 mile range, this won't be an issue for me.

I was unaware they do an Electric B Class!!!!

Why not go Hybrid, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is excellent.

Have you had a look at the C350e - not fully EV but plug in

well, interesting!
IMO the Japanese have the hybrid and electric vehicle thing sussed- Toyota, Lexus, Nissan, Mitsubishi all have proven, reliable and innovative vehicle, albeit dull as dishwater- the European manufacturers however are playing catch up and I think trying too hard, in the case of Mercedes prepared to test drive the cars with consumers in production.
a C350e was mentioned- on paper almost a supercar you could run for very little- can't get one for love or money/the 300h engine does seem 'challenged' - not sure if I could trust the B250e against that background?
You mentioned all the good things on the Nissan Leaf- for me if the electric economy thing is the focus, go with it, why bother against the 'best'

For our next it will be the i3..........but on lease until a model with a more "liveable" range comes out.

Driving and being in the i3 just feels like driving the future.

Thanks for the comments folks.

I should have added... I own a Toyota Yaris Hybrid at the moment - the smallest of the hybrids you can buy (I think). I like the silence of gliding around on the electric motor, but obviously for now it's only short distances. To drive quietly all the time would be special.

The C350e is a bit out of my budget.

I agree with other comments, that the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV certainly appears to be the best plug in hybrid. However, it doesn't really appeal to me.

I'm really looking forward to getting to test drive a B250e!

Unfortunately the PHEV has never been available with a light interior which has ruled it out for me, drove nicely though and I do like the larger, higher driving experience.

John,
The Lexus GS450h is anything but dull!
Top speed limited to 155mph and 0-60 in 5.9 seconds.
Average consumption (for a V6 ) is 35mpg.

(And I have a 200,000 miles plus E220CDi )

Regards
John

eh, you are right- forgot that one (you still have it?).....I did look at the GS300h before getting the A6 (my colleague got a NX200h) at Cheshire oaks- the dealership was quite excellent- the 450 didn't fit my company policy (which I wrote, how stupid is that?) although it was immense. The outer styling of the GS IMO is looking dated, the IS is too small, hated the NX - hence I didn't go Lexus.
However that all said, inside the GS really well sorted and rapid- you are right, apologies for missing it!
Cheers
John

Just a quick update from me...

No news on a test drive yet. But the dealer has promised me a call tomorrow.

I've done some homework and it appears up to the end of June this year only 61 Electric B-Classes have been registered in the UK, so it does seem a very niche car!

By way of Comparison:

BMW i3 - 2484 registered (of which 905 are pure electric)
Nissan Leaf - 9310 registered
Volkswagen E Gold - 88 registered

In case anyone was interested.

IMO the leaf is a hideous looking thing.

i have seen a fair few charging points around here though, and the electric cars only parking spaces. only ever once seen a car in an electric car space. didnt see the badges to see what model it was but it WAS a tesla (99% certain it was a model S or whatever its called)

and whilst im not really into the whole electric car thing, this thing, from the outside at least, looked STUNNING!

Hi, we have been running a B250e for a year if anyone wants to know anything about them.
great as a local run about..

I've owned mine for three weeks now and still very impressed by how clever the Merc engineers are having made it so "normal" to drive. Two questions - your answers may reassure me!
1. Do you notice that the car gets slightly unsettled if you are using D- and you lift off mid-corner? I suppose the recuperative braking is front wheels only which would explain the sensation.
2. Unable to fit wallbox but mini 3-pin charger works fine overnight. Have charging rate set at 13A (max, 4 green lights). No overheating of garage electrics but short black flex from plug to control box gets surprisingly hot. Have you experienced this at all?

TIA, Andy

And another thing - do you mind not monopolising the forum - 4 posts in 14 years - time to cool it!!!!!!!

great as a local run about..

I had read that no fast charge options exist for the B250e and that the only charging option is via a standard 13 amp plug?

That seems to be a silly mistake and would mean that taking the car very far is out of the question.
