I am awaiting delivery of my Mercedes and, a couple months later, the delivery of my first kid.
I have been trying to do some research into prams/car seats etc and it looks like they tie your hands with this transponder in their own child seats. Does anyone know if the MB child seats are compatible with any prams out there? Ideally we don't want a car seat and pram when you can get these 3 in 1 things.
Is it possible top get the air-bags disabled without the MB seat - how much does it cost??
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

This has been covered before so you should be able to pick the history up with a little searching.
Since my youngest is now 14 im a bit out of touch, however I assume that you are buying a 2 seater, the reason for this assumption is that regardless of the air bag problem the front passanger seat is the most dangerous seat in any car, both for adults and children. Therfore if you have back seats thats where the child should be. As far as disabling airbags, thats a difficult one. Whilst some cars have a switch (Alfa for example) my understanding is that MB don't. I also believe that if you (or the dealer) disable the airbag then you are running into legal problems, I also suspect the dealer would refuse to help because they dont want to be on risk if you had an accident and someone is injured that could have been protected by the airbag.

hope this helps at least a little.

Hi,
Congratulations on both :)
I am pretty sure that the merc seats are a rebadged high street brand. When we had our first child a few years back the mother in law ran out and bought us a Mamas and Papas three in one baby buggy. My first thought was ****** hell they sent men to the moon with less equipment than this  My better half assured me that this was "THE" way to go and I should bow down to a mothers intuition :( few months later and the child is out of the rear facing seat and funnily enough noises started to be made about how much easier it would be to have one of those tricycle buggies ...

I agree it was very nice until Sam decides to try and use a bus and then we got a lightweight "umbrella" type ..... I now have five buggies clogging up my garage and there are several dads down the local pub that can claim more than me! Thankfully both our children are now walking.

I would suggest watching ebay for a second hand merc seat getting it for peanuts and removing the chip :D you can then place this in the car and ensure that the transponder deactivates the airbag then choose a seat that suits you rather than merc but I would not be too quick to have an all in one buggy as there will be better long term options available (I have found that the size of the wheels is the most important point, as if they are too big they take up too much space in the car :) and too small gives you're child a ride from hell over any uneven surface :) )

best of luck :D

This has been covered a few weeks ago . Why dont you buy the correct seat or do as everyone else does. Put a seat in the back. You don't really want a crying brat in the front anyway......

The Merc seat is the "Britax Duo" with a transponder fitted

Search on that or talk to Britax

IMPORTANT RECALL

this is quoted from the mb website...

Recall of ?Kiddy TopSafe? Child Seats
Mercedes-Benz advises all customers that have purchased the ?Kiddy TopSafe? child seat between 1 January 2003 and 25 November 2004 to return the child seat to a Mercedes-Benz retailer immediately.

Through our continuous monitoring of product quality it has been identified that a production issue may exist with the ISOFIX anchoring on the seat. These do not comply with the security specifications and may in extreme cases open in the event of an accident. Therefore the child seat security cannot be guaranteed.

Please therefore contact your Mercedes-Benz retailer as soon as possible. You will, of course, be refunded the full purchase price and offered an alternative replacement seat free of charge.

NOTE .... ITS ONLY THE KIDDY TOPSAFE INVOLVED IN THE RECALL
