My e class is very slow going into gears on cold times,is there any way of doing this faster.e320 cdi 2004,just brought it,took for mot ,sailed through no adviserys,must be off to good start I hope,because I love the car,as when your older you need all the comfort you can get.

As above, take it to a Mercedes specialist for an ATF change. Should be done every 37k miles on a 5 speed, not sure on a 7g

It will be 5sp at that age and one of the ahem sealed for life boxes.
As said get it serviced.

Gearbox oil change .

I had the same problem on my old 2012 W204 7G. I had the ATF changed and it made absolutely no difference at all.

The W204 I had before that was a 5G and behaved perfectly, same with my current W205 9G. Is it just an issue with the 7G or am I just completely on the wrong track ?

When the car is cold , it will hold the lower gears for longer to speed up the warm up . Other than that MB specialist time .
Has the atf dipstick in the engine bay got this red cap ?

Assuming it’s 128,000 it probably has never had a gearbox atf/filter change , so it’s slow to change because the whole box is full of thick sludge .
Where do you live for an Indy recommendation ?

I would have thought a 5 speed being 04, I have the same model and is slow and sometimes very harsh changing from 1st to second when cold, I had the car scanned and was told it was the turbo. Changed the turbo and this made no difference to the cold gear changes and after a test drive with my very clued up neighbour first thing he said was, 'it needs a transmission oil change and new filter and that should stop the gears changing like this when cold'
Pity I didn't take him for a drive when it was cold because having it scanned

My mate said leave a while,as it only does this till engiene warm,then going to change gear box oil,apart from that the only thing I changed was front top ball joints,flew through mot,no problem.
