We had a 101 as a breakdown wagon, with a winch mounted...Long Wheelbase. Never let us down. I remember towing a fully loaded milk tanker back from the scene of an accident with it,,, having to stop periodically and run the truck engine to keep the brake pressure up ( Truck rad was damaged in the accident) my only concern was that I only had a chain to pull it with... no truck brake bar....:shock:o_O so I had to make sure that the chain never went slack !!!! But great machine, could be stripped down completely to chassis and mechanicals, and rebuilt as something else....plus the body was mainly aluminium . I have heard ( but can't confirm) that some of the very 1st production vehs are still alive and well. :):):) ????
Best Regards Jim2.

They are indeed. Very little on them thats anything like fragile. There was a superb fully rebuilt (though not entirely original) one for sale on eBay recently with a price tag of £35k!!!

FC101s were fantastic to work on in that regard (at least as long as they weren't radio or ambulance bodied) - most of the work on the gearbox was done from the top! I fitted an overdrive to mine when I had it and didn't need to go under it at all.
All the floor panels unbolt rotted away all the way forward to the engine. Mind you if you did have to remove the gearbox they were damned heavy!!!

FTFY. :) Every one I worked on as a youth did anyway, same as the FB, which happened to be the first car I drove after passing my test.

ETA: Just noticed you're on Land Rover. I was on Vauxhall Victors. It's an age thing...

If you think greasing the many nipples on a Morris Minor was a bit of a headache.....have you ever tried replacing the clutch in one of them, lying on your back with the car on axle stands, ???? o_O;):D
Jim2

Yep...the car was standing for a couple of months so the clutch stuck. Handy panel inside the car when doing these things.

I had one case of a "Minor" stuck clutch, so I hooked it up to another car with a tpw rope, and started the engine in 1st gear, while holding the clutch in. As soon at the slack was taken up, and the load came on the clutch. it freed up in an instant. Desperate situations need desperate remedies LOL, and it was that or another clutch change lying on my back under a jacked up car, in a farmers yard.....

Makes me wonder when us old folk have finished wittering on about our old mechanical foibles, what will the youth of today be talking about in 20 years with the electric generation.

Remember that big capacitor I used to fire up some dead batteries ?

What about the time I connected to a lamp post to get some power to go home ?

Do you remember the software virus that car thieves planted in charging stations to steal your car ?

Or when we used our play station controllers to drive our cars ?

How about:- " I remember when cars had actual drivers....and not computers doing the driving." LOL
