If you cant turn the key to position 1 you can not remove the barrel.
You will have to cut / grind or smash(what ever appropriate) the complete steering lock Assembly from the column and replace with new lock and barrel.
Not rubbing salt into the wounds, but just in case any one else is reading this if your 190 ignition key is sticking it needs a new barrel, replace with out delay otherwise

Barrel removal tool

It looks a bit like two pieces of welding wire (or equivalent) shoved down the slots either side of the barrel...

You may be lucky in shifting the switch to position 1 or 2. But when they start breaking up they do tend to fail badly. Your local dealership or a car locksmith may be able to remove the barrel without damage but it may be costly

Order a new barrel now keyed to your car - they take a couple of days to come from Germany but are more useful than the "get you home" version that uses a different key

Nearly There

right i've managed to get the key turning so its drivable, the question now is how long it's gonna remain usable, i need to get to the stealership on sturday to get the barrel, thats not the problem. the thing is im not averse to trying my hand at anything i think i can do, and removing the barrel sound pretty easy, but i need a good explaination or picture of the tool used to extract the barrel, thankyou

Courtesy of member 190D some months ago:

Small length of welding rod bent in the shape of a U With both ends tapered at the inside. Turn ignition switch until notches line up and insert the tool whilst pulling on the key.

Apparently the job takes all of 10 seconds!

HTH, Tom.

You will need to order it through your stealer, you will have to take the registration document and something with your name and address on it.
thats what vardi in glasgow asked me to produce anyway

Hi. My toes are curling up at the thought of a faulty barrel GOING BACK IN! You may not be so lucky next time and face a mega-bucks bill! I'd personally be VERY inclined to put up with the inconvenience of the van for a few days till a new barrel was obtained - seriously.
Good luck anyway, Tom.

1995 E320 Key Barrel will not come out

Hello

I followed the instructions - I fashioned a removal tooko out of a paper clip - it seems to be 'bottoming' in the holes. But I can not get the barrel out when I pull on the key. How far in does the paper clip need to go in to be sure to disengage the barrel? Can I get the 'official' tool somewhere. Any help would sure be appreciated. I am afraid to drive it to the steeler as the key might jam... thanks!

e320 ingniton key barrel removal

Thank you Malcolm, I am in position 1 - if not the tool does not go very far at all. I read the previous post and they said brute forcce and wriggling. I tried all kinds of wire-like devices. I wonder If I have to squeeze them together to get it out. Anyway the paper would be appreciated. sdoherty_100 at hotmail thanks. what a PITA this job is so far!

I'm also in the process of trying to remove the barrel on my 1994 E300D.
Does the black bell shaped outer housing come away with the barrel. I fashioned two things to remove the lock out of allan keys I have beveled the ends with a grinder. They go in about an inch or so. The merc dealer has lent me a replacement barrel until my "paired to key" one comes from Germany, but I can't get the old one out.
As my old ignition is a bit shaky I am not sure where position 1 is. when the key is at 90' from insert position that seems to be where i can get the allan keys in..........would this be the right position.
my e-mail is
afortune@blueyonder.co.uk
If you could send me the gen on removal It would be much appreciated
Thanks
Adrian

Changed it.......... the old barrel fell into 3 pieces when I got it out!!!!! the leg had snapped off and the top had come away - lucky or what??
Two thin allen keys will do it, I made the mistake of only grinding one to a bevel they both need grinding down. The bevels go to the inside, a bit of pushing and pulling and it popped right out
Cheers

95 E320 ignition barrel

I was unable to get the barrel out so I had to replace the ENTIRE unit. I got one off the internet from a junkyard in Connecticut for 99$. It took some doing and drilling but I got it done.
