W204 C250 CDI 2011 - Facelift
I seem to have a problem with my C220 CDI - Auto - 03 plate.

The BAS and ESP warning light seems to appear on the dash on startup and has become more frequent in the last few weeks.
I switch the ignition off and restart and all is fine - no warning lights.

I have read some posts and have realised it could be the brake light switch.
So I popped over to the dealers and they provided me with one - approx £13.

However, my mechanic could not locate it under the footwell. On further investigation by him, it appears that on this model the switch is part of the master cylinder (near the brake fluid container).

So i took the switch back to the dealers and they have quoted me £70 for the new part. (it is not stocked so they have to order it and i cant claim a refund if it is incorrect)

I just wanted to check before i place the order whether this switch which is attched to the master cylinder will still be the cause of my problem or is it only the ones that are located under the footwell.

Any advice will be well appreciated.
Thanks

Thanks - Television.

My mechanic undid the screws above the footwell and stripped all the plastic / foam casing.

There wasn't a socket for the brake light switch to go into.

It is only then that he located it next to the brake fluid container.

Are you suggesting that it attaches to the foot pedal.

Just taken the car to a merc specialist who plugged in the star diagnostic machine.
The fault code stored was for the travel sensor (electrical fault).
He has replaced it. Hopefully should be ok now.

Thanks for your help guys.

BAS/ESP - on a 2000 CLK 200 in Dublin (85k mls)

I've been having the BAS/ESP light coming on at infrequent intervals for a few months now. Starting sometimes is problematic - engine chugging, low power. Goes away when engine warms up. A few weeks ago, had significant power loss for a 1-hour journey. During a regular B service at my local Merc dealer last week, he tells me it's either an air flow meter (€450 + VAT + labour) or a brake light switch (€223 + VAT + Labour)! Haven't had either done yet but BAS/ESP light no longer coming on, though power output feels uneven. Any suggestions? Should I go ahead and fit the two parts?

Rgds, Pat.

One point to remember as well.

If the fault lights come on at start up (particularly if the car has sat for a period of more than a few hours) and they don't come back on when you restart the car then it's worth getting the battery checked.

As the batteries age, they lose their ability to hold their charge, the voltage drops and when all of those lovely ECUs go through their power up routines they log faults which are more to do with low voltage than a definite fault.

Thanks for the comments and advice. These prices are in EUROS, but must admit I thought these seemed very expensive. Authorised Merc dealer in Dublin - Alo Kavanagh. Printout produced during a diagnostic from a different Merc dealer the previous week (before B service) showed -

P0170 A Part throttle self-adaptation at limit value (A61)
P0300 B Misfiring damages TWC
P0304 B Misfiring damages TWX Cyl. 4
P0130 A 02 sensor upstream TWC (R22)
P0301 B Misfiring damages TWC Cyl. 1
P1584 Stop lamp switch (my note - is this the Brake Light Switch?)

If the MAF is the likely problem & solution, reckon I'll change it myself - following advice elsewhere on the site.

Great website - super advice!

Regards, Pat.

Well you could unplug it and try the car,, this is no guarantee on the MAF being faulty but in many cases it does prove the point

as colin says, the p0170 and p0130 codes point pretty obviously to the maf sensor. the p03** codes fit as well. also, yes, it is the brake light switch.
