BAS & ASR warning light, but with loss of power.

Today while driving along the motorway, the BAS & ASR light came on. I then lost complete power and had to pull over on to the hard shoulder. When I tried to start it it just kept turning over and all the dash warning lights lit up.
I called the RAC, and when he came it started. Is this because I removed the key which may have reset it?
Any idea if this could be the same issue as a lot of the other posts, ie the brake switch?
All the others mention the light coming on, but not the loss of power which concerns me. Seems to be driving fine at the moment though.
I have a 1996 C200 Auto.

Same thing happened to me a few days ago on my CLK. The speed sensor ring on the rear o/s driveshaft fell off (during an overtake) and the dash lit up with warnings that the ABS/Brake Assist/Stability had gone AWOL and the car revved but no drive- like it had been knocked into neutral- handy during an overtake eh? Stopped the car and restarted and it drove OK, but maybe there is a limiter (I was doing about 80 mph when it happened) Haven't been out of town since to see if it's limited- maybe 100kmh? Suspect it's a Merc 'safety' thing :)

Anyway, if it is the ring on your car, Mercedes want around £600 for a whole new driveshaft, the ring isn't sold separately. I got a secondhand one for £82.50 delivered top condition from MSL in Birmingham.

Cheers

Similar thing on mine but that was crank position sensor. Cut out a few times, would turn over but not start. Leave it 10 mins and started fine.

CPS I think the engine had cut hence the ABS and ESP lamps on £47 from Bosch or £145 from MB

Thankyou both for the information.
I looked at the diagram, but am really struggling to find the sensor on the car.
Can you give me some more pointers to help me locate it?
