My A190 had the BAS & ESP lights come on the dash and then went into limp home go slow mode (only drives about 10mph). Does anyknow what this could be?

I had this within months when it was new, it is now 3 1/2 years old, it was a case of turning off the ignition and back on again, and it was ok, I probably wouldnt mind, but my pregnant wife and baby daughter were in the car at the time without me and naturally i am am concerned..

I will try my luck at asking the local stealer, don't wish to take it in as no doubt costly repair bills await and I don't have much confdence in them.

Probably the brake light switch is faulty.

I didn't know this brought on the limp home on an A class, but it will definately bring on BAS/ASR light, which possibly brings on limp home.

Buy a new switch and fit it yourself. Even if it isn't that they only cost a few pounds.

bas/esp light on should not cause it to go into limp home. What transmission bo you have in the car. I have had a run on steering angle sensors but it maybe best to get it looked at by a merc dealer.

BAS/ESP light

Hi,

My old A160 Elegance had this problem, it was an Automatic. It all came on when I took the battery out to replace it. Funny, it was after 3 years of been in the car from new.

All electrics got lost, one touch e/windows and the BAS/ESP lights stayed on. My friendly dealer in Berkshire got a call from me asking for advice and he gave me some. Basically it could be that the battery could be needing a change hence the power loss.

If this is the case, the BAS/ESP need to be tuned by the computer. For this I was told to turn the engine on. In rapid succession tun the wheel left and then right twice all the way, this should turn the light of and bring harmony to the car. It worked for me.

Following this I suggest that after this you have this checked out with a dealer just to make sure that you do not not have any further problems.

Safe and happy motoring,

Andrew

Its a manual car,

one funny thing is that the car generally kangaroos for a while as well. I had the electronic box on the accelerator pedal replaced under warranty, for exactly the same thing.. Bit worrying if its broken again..

Bas ESP

Hi

Bas/esp faults don't normally put the car into emergency mode I would guess that its prob an engine fault or possibly speed signal fault go to the dealer evenif its only to get the fault codes ASk for a print out

This is normal reset procedure after battery disconnection. Window normalisation, sunroof normalisation, steering sensor normalisation , clock setting.

My A160 Avantgarde intermittently has this problem. Recently got it checked out. The local Merc Specialist first reported it as an electrical fault and said that they'd cleared it. However, 1/2 mile down the road and the lights were back on.

Booked back in the week after for 2 days only to be told that it will cost £700 for a new system control unit. Common fault apparently. Haven't had the chance to get it done but am going home to try the reset method using the steering wheel tonight!!!!

Additionally, when the lights come on, the traction control becomes inoperative and the on/off switch does jack.
