I've had the random BAS/ESP warning light problem for about 6 months.
Recently it has been coming on at some point on every journey.
So I fitted a new brake light switch from Europarts on Friday and for
125 miles at the weekend the light stayed off. This morning, both on the way to work and going home, it came on again.

Any ideas what to do next?
Thanks,

i had this on my 210. i tolerated the light coming on for a while then it just stopped coming on. i think it was because it was an active code that it came on. after a while it becomes a stored code so it stops putting the light on, stores the code so you know there was a fault but its gone. you could try having the codes read and cleared, if its really doing your head in! that would tell you what was wrong or clear the fault and stop the light coming on! or just wait a few weeks like i did and it stopped on its own!

I did not know that they were sold outside the MB network, is it still a faulty switch or do you put the car on STAR and see what it says

I am not sure if MB have been modifying the switches as this fault has eased off over the last few months

I don't know if the Europarts switch is oem or pattern, the name on the package is 'Trucktec automotive, Germany. It looks and feels exactly the same as the old one, so if it is a pattern part, it's a good one.

I'm wondering if the old switch was really faulty as I measured it's contact resistance with a digital meter and it was 0.4 ohms at the most.
Is there anything else that causes the same symptoms?

More information - I tried the BAS function while the warning light was on, and it worked normally.

You cant try BAS, but you can with ABS and that is not the same thing.

You also cannot measure the switch, as what happens is, the CAN signal gets shorted out that kills the speed signal, it is this that puts on the message BAS/ESP

Beg to differ.
When I come off the throttle and onto the brakes very quickly as in an emergency, the bas does the braking for me and the peddle feels like it is being pulled down from under my foot. It is a horrible feeling as if a brake pipe has burst.
This is different to the pulsing of the abs.

Nice one Pete, It hasn't come on for the last 3 days now, so it looks like I'm having the same experience that you did.

P.S. Make that 2 days - I rode my bicycle to work yesterday!

With these faults one can only give the most common faults to start with,,this was the Brake light switch, as earlier, this is dying off now. There is a mound of things that can cause it, on most cars it is a wheel sensor, low battery blip or other thing. The ABS pump is not immune to faults and intermittent faults could be bad soldering on the connector PCB, and I have fixed thos before now
