My 1999 E300 TD has an annoying little fault in that when you drive the car, after 7 or 8 times of pressing the brake pedal, no matter how gently you use the brakes, it puts the brake assist light on. ive changed the brake light switch and its no better. dealers want 70quid for half an hour to put it on their code reader and im not working at the moment due to the general lack of work everywhere. any ideas to help are gratefully appreciated. with the car i mean!

I am not doing well with your faults.

What it says is, if after changing the brake light switch the lamp does not come on, then nothing to do.
If the light comes on, then remove the fault code from the control unit

Pete when you say press the pedal 7 or 8 times do you mean in quick succession, if so then then the vacuum in the servo could be suspect or the vacuum pump, also check the lines from the pump to the servo.. just a thot ..

no i mean when the pedal has been pressed 7 or 8 times in a journey. in town it can come on after a mile or so in stop start traffic. on motorway trips on a 50 mile run to visit relations it doesnt come on untill about 2 miles from the end of the trip as i go almost straight onto the motorway from home then straight a roads untill then. it may be a few more than 7 or 8 presses but not many though. a mile in heavy stop start traffic usually does the trick though. brakes themselves work perfectly. cant tell the difference if the light is on or hasnt appeared yet, they feel and stop the same. all ideas gratefully recieved though. never know when they will be needed!
