The above cars along with the Mclaren SLR use different battery technolagy. the dual Batteries for these cars have been developed by Varta and called AGM (absorbent glass mat) the advantage = comparable to lead acid batteries 30% larger and 15% more cold start capacity also cyclic durability 3 times longer and 50% longer service. as they are fully sealed for life they can be put anywhere on the car.

Been used in motorcycles for years as they are fully sealed and can be mounted in any position ie upside down as you say.

They dont like being flattened right down and you cant charge them quickly either

Can you really put these special batteries ANYWHERE, including inside the passenger compartment? Are the gases given off confined within the battery?

Yep you can put them where you like, No gasses no nothing, they are absorbed by the glass mat that converts the gas back to liquid.
