My c220 cdi 2002 with 108k miles has shown "Battery/Alternator Visit Workshop"
twice.
This warning has not re appeared.
I replaced the free wheel pulley last year, could a faulty pulley cause this warning light to come on?
Are there any tests I can do to determine what is wrong,I put the avo meter across the battery and it gave a reading of 12.6v stopped and 14.2 at tickover.
I have read other posts and they say that the regulator could be gone .
So my options are Alternator gone,
Battery gone,
Regulator gone
Faulty pulley.
Any advice would be appreciated from any other members I presume alternators rarely need replacement .Thanks again.

normally ,voltage out put from regulator, should not over 14v.

That's not correct...........the alternator normally charges the battery at between 13.5/14.5 volts.

As above nothing wrong with that voltage.

It is more of a brush pack that you can replace

Am i correct in thinking that some 220cdi's are fitted with a water cooled alternator?.........if so, i thought that they are not diy repairable due to not being able to aquire the necessary parts.

Diarmaid,
Your alternator output is fine............. if your battery is a few years old and tired it could cause the warning message momentarily when a heavy electrical load is applied on it. Certainly, if it is more than 5 years old i would renew it. My original battery 'died' at 6 years.

Thank you for all your advice I brought my car to an indie today as a ticking noise came into it I still think its the alternator pulley the clutch type, and yes its the water cooled version.
I will keep you posted .Is it very difficult to remove a water cooled alternator or can the pulley be replaced in situ.
Thanks again,

Dear all,
Thanks for your responses my indie has fitted a secondhand alternator as he says my old one is gone I am happy enough and it cost me 330 euro.
It seems a little early for this to happen at 108k miles.
Thanks again for all your help.
