I've read that a battery charger can be fitted permanently to the car and just needs plugging-in put the vehicle on charge. I'd like to use a portable 5 amp charger on my s211 wagon, which is continually losing charge due to lack of use, but the charger instructions insist that the battery must be first disconnected and removed from the car. Is that true? - because I can't believe anyone's going to go to that amount of trouble, or can I simply connect the charger to the 90Ah boot/starter battery.

Id guess that your 5a chargrer is a powerpack type - this would not be good to connect to your delicate vehicle electrics. The chargers that can be left connected to the vehicle (Ctek / maypole etc) have control circuitry to limit the output. post the charger you have and many clued-up folks can give you some good info

Get a battery conditioner ctek/optimate/maypole etc. Wire up the quick release connection to the battery and connect it when you park up

I bought one of these from Costco as it was reduced and it comes with the leads to connect to your battery,

The main battery in the car is an Exide 'Micro-Hybrid' AGM, EK 920, 92Ah unit. Would a Ctek CT5 charger be suitable to use?

I've been using a CTEK 3.6 amp charger for years, connected via the quick connect adaptor. Works faultlessly and keeps my SLK and CLK cars properly charged up through long periods of inactivity.

Thanks for all the advice and excuse my ignorance. I've ordered a Ctek Multi MSX 5 unit. Fingers crossed! (Couldn't find a CT5 unit anywhere except the US - shipping cost more than the charger!)
