Re: 2005 E320 CDI

Our neighbours are away for the winter and I'm looking after their car (above). The battery went flat (very flat), so I have connected up my battery charger to the pegs under the bonnet and left it for a couple of days. Now its alive again, but it has two error messages on the dash - ABS & BAS faults - visit workshop!

Is there really a fault or is there a common problem on Mercs when the battery goes flat?

Once the car is started, turn the steering all the way to the right and then all the way to the left, that ought to clear it

Had same problem when my battery failed. Used a charger with battery in place, should have removed first. You will need to take to MB or indie with Star to get faults removed and systems reset.

I think that the faults may go away after a couple of starts or a short drive,,turning the wheel from lock to lock will fix ESP but not ABS-BAS things

This car could have 2 batteries as the change was in 2005

ESP/BAS/ABS all the same fault, as Malc a reset and restart will clear the faults!

Hope your's do go but same faults on my 2001 W203 C180 would not go away. I was advised on "other" forum that fault was due to me causing a spike in the electrics by charging the battery whilst in situ. Only have one battery though.

I can understand you say what you have for a 203, but the 210 is a different kettle of fish with the electrics, and much easier to work on

Wish i'd bought the 210.

There are more ESP and ABS fault known on early 203's than any other car, should be OK though once all done

Paintwork, don't talk about paintwork. Rusty rear wheel arches, rusty bottom of doors and front corner of bonnet.

Thanks guys for your help.

Today I ran the car down the road and the brake errors went. I had to change a flat tyre first:twisted:. Keeping an eye on someone's car while they are on holiday should be easy enough, but things are never that straight forward.

And yes, it has only one battery. A very large one though. I lifted the rear seat today. It will probably need charging up again before they return, so I'll disconnect the battery next time.

Yes the OCP is a known source of leaks, but in this case the owner of the car has been away a long time
