whenever i have to carry out any work on the fuel system on my w210 e300 turbodiesel, the battery seems to flatten after aroun 10 - 20 seconds of engine cranking. what spec should the battery be? it sometimes does this anyhow, but leave it for a minute or so and it starts! car also always seems to crank slowly so im wondering if its got the right battery on and if theres a heavier duty version? :-?

100 amp hour will do the trick, What do you have on at the moment.

I remember with those engines the battery they never lasted to long after cranking for long, changing fuel filters was a nightmare if you didn't fill it first.

Your battery does sound to be past its best, the lower the voltage the higher the cranking amps, and that is not good for the starter.

I thought that some one would ask as its against normal behavior as we know it, the starter engages, and there is insufficient voltage (pressure) as the motor is near stalling point the current will rise rapidly owing to the way that the starter motors are wound.

Starter motors are seldom excepted back under guarantee if the commutator and shaft have blued with the heat

i always fill my fuel filter and it still hasnt enough juice to start it! incidentally i have 3 batteries, 1 small (70 amp hour) and 2 large (88 amp hour) batteries and its the same with any of them fitted! had 1 of the bigger ones and the small one on my w202 c250 turbodiesel and it was never a problem, so im guessing either the batteries arent big enough, there on their way out or theres something making the starter drain them unbelievably fast!

It is not the size here. Any good battery from 60 amp up if fully charged would start it. You do need to know the condition of the batteries that you have, why not get them all tested

A Bosch service center or Lucus have the gear, and it takes seconds, and they do not normally charge

Gets you out of trouble for now but in the winter the less amps you have will cause you more faults!!

no bosch centrenear me that im aware of. must look into that. lucas have closed down after euro car parts bought them out and put lucas into administration! my 88 amp battery has always been fine, if a little slow turning. well, fine as long as no repairs etc have been carried out 2 fuel system meaning a degee of bleeding is required! even with both 88 amp ones charged, bleeding fuel, say a pre filled fuel filter, it flattens batteries after mere seconds! maybe i should make an extra battery tray, cables etc and try running with both batteries at once like a 12 volt truck!! incidentally, once its started and run foronly 10 mins or so, it will start next day!

unfortunately thats what happened Malcolm. it happened last year sometime, about september or october i think! i knew most of the staff at my local branch. a good bunch of people and very helpful. they knew nothing about it. went home after their saturday shift as normal, came in monday morning to find the locks had been changed and a notice on the inside of the door stating that the branch was no longer trading! the manager travelled 50miles to find this out!

I have been recommending them for a long time here as a battery outlet that were very good and helpful. and they have helped me out a few times, it does not make sense, but thank you for the info
