I bet that got your attention?

Quite frankly though that's exactly what happened and neither my passenger or I could pick it up for laughing!!!

I pulled up to park at a friends house to drop them off and pulled on the handbrake in my 190D 2.5, Perhaps I should call it a button but it looses the comedy effect if I do

Anyway back to parking, stopped the car on the footbrake and applied the handbrake stopping at the 4th Click (must adjust that! tut tut tut) only to have the knob / button fly off hit the dash and hit my passenger on the chin and disappear into the footwell!!!

Quite bizarre!! thankfully I maintained pressure on the footbrake and avoided rolling into his wifes motor!!!

So the rest of the question is?? Stop laughing Do I ring Mercedes and ask for a Knob or a button?? and is it a seperate part??

Hi All

Something similar happened to the handbrake on a previous car: the button popped out. The ratchet didn't release so there was no chance of the car rolling. I found the button under the driver's seat and replaced it after taking apart the handbrake and inspecting it. I have no idea why it happened and it never happened again.

The most scary handbrake episode I had was when I was parked outside my garage with the engine running. I got out of my car to open the garage doors - my back to the car - when I heard a 'click' followed by the sound of wheels rotating against gravel. I turned around and saw my car gradually gaining speed - downhill! The handbrake had released. Adrenalin-powered, I raced down the hill, opened the door and jumped in the car and quickly applied the handbrake. A few more feet and my Doly would have hit the wall, damaging its nearside front wing. No one else was at risk because the entrance to my garage is via a narrow lane seldom used by members of the general public. I sheepishly reversed my car about thirty yards and drove it into my garage.

It's heart-stopping events like this that you never forget and I double-checked my handbrake setting thereafter. I always listen for a least two 'clicks'.

However, I'm not so rigorous about applying the parking brake on the Merc'. If the road surface is flat I usually rely upon the transmission lock alone but I always park with the front wheels pointing in the direction of the curb, just in case. When I do apply the parking brake I still listen out for the two or more clicks.

REGARDS

Phil

Happily a quick update part purchased and old goofy bit removed

It's as simple as changing the knob BUT warm it up a wee bit it make it easier to slide into place and click home

It's so nice to hear the click click click of a handbrake ratchet after all this time

Thanks for the help

Jay
