Check the pivot bearing on the tensioning arm too,as these tend to wear out.
Replacing the damper itself is pretty much as it looks as I recall-a bolt at each end & nimble fingers.
Often when the fan belt damper is creating noise, and when moved feels loose try this fix. It is usually only the top rubber bush that has become worn. This bush has a steel innner tube. inside the ruber bush, through which passes the mounting bolt. If you obtain a classic Mini engine steady arm mounting bush kit - about a £1, it has tapered inner tubes either steel or plactic. Use one of these to replace the steel tube. You may need to lubricate it to get it to go in, or in extreme cases mount it on a nut and bolt and sand it down in diameter using wet&dry paper etc.. Replace the damper but be careful not to over tighten or you risk the front part of the mounting casting cracking off. No need to remove the lower pulley to do this.
The link posted above is for the steering damper, not the belt damper.
You'll find the lower bolt fouls on the water pump pulley (unless it's been out before and someone has ground a bit off the end!)
If you remove the tensioning spring, and slip the belt over the tensioner bearing, you'll be able to rotate the entire tensioner assembly into a more favourabel orientation to get the lower bolt out.
