My C200 is very noisy from the belt, I had a listen with a probe to all the pulleys and all seem fine though some minor noise from the water pump. Sometimes its quiet but most of the time she's a real whistler. Is this normal?

Cheers :)

So's mine ...

... on a W124 300CE-24.

If I spray a minute amount of silicon spray on to the belt, it IMMEDIATELY goes quiet.

This tells me that it's the belt/pulley interface that's generating the squeak/whistle. I was worried that it might be a bearing in the water pump, PS pump etc. but the tiny spray could not influence these things.

And a while later it comes back? Damn, blast and bottom.

During the summer, a generous spray would quiten things for a few weeks. Now it's wet and cold, a spray works for a day or less.

My feeling is that a new belt and thorough cleaning of all pulleys would probably solve the problem but I can't be bothered as it's a fairly new belt.

Frustrating isn't it?

My 300CE ...

... whistles at idle, in or out of gear and at speed too. It seems to be less prevalent as the engine speed rises but I have heard it echoing off crash barriers at 50 or more mph. Again, silicon spray kills the whistle completely for varying amounts of time.

Or maybe, Telly, your question was addressed to RTDC. Thanks, as always, for your interest and brainy chat!

Others have talked about this issue and have suggested that clean-up and new belt is the answer.

Best to all.

I will come back to this as there are known reasons for this

Mine will whistle at idle quite loudly and I can hear it at slow speeds as well, on a few occasions after a good run she is pretty quiet. I have no idea how old the belt is it’s the old story the old girl hasn’t had the care and attention she deserves from a prior owner.

What’s this silicon spray?

Cheers
