hi all
97 sl 500 - on start up lots of squeeling from v-belt area, worse when cold and wet.
every thing ( water temp etc) seems to work ok and cant see any obvious belt slip. noise disappears after engine warm.
am I looking at a new belt ( 80,000 ) or bearing/tensioner on its way out?
should I beware of " catastrophic " belt failure ?
regards

From experience  there is an immediate and distinct failure of the power steering. I can assure you that you WILL notice. If its any comfort, I drove on for another 5/6 miles with no issues arising. Is is NOT a catastrophic event (except for your wallet)

unlike on the straight 6 320 cdi motor where the belt smashes the rad to bits.

i would add that i refer to the 210 e class here.
the belt and rad are very close together ( 2 - 3 inches maybe ) sorry if i worried you.
