I have been trying to find out as to whether my car a 1450cc B180 b class has a belt or chain driven cam shaft. I was under the impression that this particular engine was Renault/Nessan . which in there own models are belt driven camshaft. The reason for my interest is the car is due for a service and is six years old, according to Renaults service details the belt should be changed at 150000km or five years. That obviously missed on the last service if it is belt driven. question is it belt or chain

Thanks Bobcat,
At the previous service (Then 5yrs old) I asked the service rep at the Mercedes dealership had the belt been checked ?? Reply doesn't have a belt all Mercedes have chain driven cam shafts. So much for knowledge of there vehicles.

it seems that there is another way to drive a cam shaft these days .... Peugeot (& others?) now use a belt that sits in the oil! o_O

it's checked using a GO/NO GO gauge ie it's allowed to swell so much before it's changed!

Yes... Ford have been doing this for some years on the 1.8/2.0 diesels... perhaps as long as 10yrs. It goes against all logic in my head but apparently reduces friction in that part of the engine and a correctly designed belt will cope.

Yes I've rebuilt those Essex engines in the past.... distributor/oil pump gear and shaft was a poor design too.

And rocker shaft wear too now I think about it.

I bet someone said that about the fibre gear that Ford used to use on the V6 Essex engine in the Granadas & Capris
Yep. I had 2 fail
The first was the nylon teeth on the large steel center. That took 9 valves with it.
The second was the large fibre gear on the smallish steel center. Caught that before it failed - only had 10° of movement between the center and the fibre.
