Hi all,

As title, whats the best engine oil for an e270 cdi w211, the light hasnt come on yet, but its been a while since it was last serviced, and still another 9k before it gets its next, so thought it would be good to drain current oil and put some brand new quality stuff in.

Also, any reccoendations on where to buy?

Thanks,

Digi

Hello Digisatman, the standard moil used by MB in all the engines is Mobil 1

you can buy it over the net much cheaper than MB or from places like Cosco.

What year? If you have a particulate filter, you will need 5w30 grade oil. If not, Mobil 1 or a good equivalent.

Shell have a new synthetic specialist diesel oil available now. It is Rimula Ultra Fully Synthetic 10W/40. This is the newest spec available and meets all the requirements from MB and VW. It is about the same price as Mobil 1 in Australia - don't know about the UK.
I like it because it is a specialist DIESEL oil, unlike Mobil 1.

Its best to stay with the oil used previously, swapping from one oil to another doesent do the engine any good. Check your service book for more info,

That's worrying. My car's service book has one oil change with Shell and the next with Mobil1. Both at MB dealers.

I wouldn't worry about it, mine started out on a Castrol then switched to Mobil. With no adverse effects in 120K miles :D

Hi Benzo. Dident mean to worry you, moving from shell to mobil I is no problem. Once your with Mobil I, stay with it. your engine will be better looked after if you dont jump from oil type to oil type each time. Once is no problem.:D

I think Erics point was to match any topups with whatever is already in there. Changing brands at oil change shouldn't make much difference.
I believ there is now a Mobil1 for the particulae filter cars which is what the garage used on mine last time but I believe E270cdis don't have particulate filters which is one of the reasons they were discontinued.
How long has the oil been in there?
There is a lot of old fashioned feelings about oil changes - every 3k, every 6 months etc as it was in the old days. Sure if you use the £5 a gallon crap, then fair enough, but your car will have the good stuff in it so IMO it's really not necessary with modern fully sythetic oils. but Some caddliacs now have oil changes every 100k and we have a chap on here with a sprinter (same engine basically) who had the oil examined after 20k and it was basically still ok!
Also, the E270 has an oil condition sensor so it will tell you if it needs a change. If it's happy, you can be too.

I am that chap, the oil was Mobil 1 and it was tested after 22-23k by 2 different laboratories. Both results indicated the oil was still ok to use for some time even though the assyst indicator was nearing a service request.

Follow the computers recomendation, it knows what it needs.

Not exactly the same, but a similar topic. My E320 cdi had a B service when I bought it in August. it has since done approx. 5K miles and tells me I am about 3900 miles from a C service.

The onboard PC says to add 1 litre of engine oil when I check it automatically.

If I top up the engine oil will this extend the service interval? From what I have read on this thread I don't need to change the oil.

On the older version of ASSYST adding 1 ltr of oil will extend the service interval. However I don't know for the newer ASSYST. What I do know is that the newer system does appear to have much shorter service intervals.

On mY E240 (MY2000) 1L of oil would have assyst adding 1000-1500 miles to the next service. This meant that by adding a bit here and there I was able to get 17k until the service finally came due. I've only put a litre in the E270cdi (04 model) once but on that occasion I was dissapointed to find that it made no difference whatsover. It stubbornly sticks to 9500 mile intervals.

I've covered 17K since last service and whilst it is booked in for Wednesday ASSYST has 700 miles to next service.

Good way to "reel us in" on a regular basis. I'll put in 1L in mine over the weekend and see what happens. I would like to extend the service interval by a bit so it gets due in good time (3K miles that is) after I take up service plus -IF I do.

Hi I Think you may find that most M/B dealers are using Shell helix or ultra .

MB just put Castrol Softec in mine.

Still not over happy as it's always had Mobil 1 *as recommended* :(

I realise that this is a pretty old thread, but perhaps Malcolm will
pick up on it.
I have read various statements here that have left me a little confused.
Mercedes recommend Mobil 1 ?
My W208 230K Sport service record shows Shell Hellix Ultra having been
for the first 5 or 6 years of its life. I assumed from this that Mercedes
would have recommended Shell ?
Here I should add that my pocket doesn't run to dealer or "indy" serviceing.
My '98 CLK has the AYST fucntion however after an oil change it requires to be manually reset at the dash.
Should I oil change at 9k miles or on the ASSYT ?

Thanks for any feedback that might follow.
Tim

There are certain standards and if you look at a can of oil, it normally says - meets
Audi 12345
Jaguar 34455,
MB 373393
etc
so, provided the oil meets the official spec as listed in your manual, I wouldn't worry about who makes it. MB "recommends" is merely a marketing tie up.
We all speak about Mobil1 as the greatest oil but to be fair most decent oil co's produce a perfectly acceptable equivalent.
Have a search for posts by "oilman" .
