I have an old E320 cdi Elegance kept mainly for its capacity and now 24 years old.
I have other cars but this is my mobile shed.
So now we are reaching the end of the line for it, still mainly all there and not full of gaping holes, looks presentable but father time catches up and it's time for another.

I would like another estate but which one ?
It won't be new so a variable budget of ten to fifteen should be enough.

I would like a comfortable rather than sporty model.

Any suggestions and anything to avoid?

What is your journey style, is a DPF a problem.
I'm guessing the clean air penalty zones aren't an issue.

Petrol means less complicated, but less mpg, and generally higher road tax.

If capacity and comfort is priority the R is hard to beat.
Pre facelift are 6 seaters, post are 7.
Early ones are 220hp (in 320 form) and the last of them 265hp (in 350 form).
320 and 350 are 4WD, 280 and 300 variant are 2WD.

Well currently no "clean air penalty zones" on my regular routes but I often don't travel more than 50 miles in a week then might go some hundreds the car is for carting stuff, a tool.

Ooh I thought, that would be interesting, but with the limited availability of the R the 2WD options seem to be on a par with hen's teeth.
So a bit thirsty, for me anyway.

We have the 2.1 (646 engine) 2009, 211 estate.
I find it retro inside, but soon forget while driving. I still like the the external appearance.
No DPF is a bonus imo.
Ample power for our needs.
We've seen 57mpg on a 60mph cruise up the M1. Last time to London return, we may, possibly, have been cruising at 80, it returned 46mpg (on the dash anyway).
I would like DRL's though, but side lights can suffice on a run.

140k miles, so some wear a tear evident.

Mrs Me would like me to swap it for a 212 cos it looks more cool. But I don't see how to justify that, as I far prefer the 646, and having a DPF wouldn't be an advantage. So that swap would need to be for a petrol version, with lower mpg and higher tax.

Much of this comes down to personal taste don't yer think?

We get up to 40 mpg on a decent run though round town it's more likely high 20s. The 300/350Cdi is more economical than the 280/320. Last trip to France (fully laden) saw 42mpg though we did drive slower than the usual 130kph.

As you have other cars, everyone I know who has one says both get one and you'll never look back.
