I used kurust under a maverick and then got it sprayed with waxoyl and did a good job ,,maybe it was the double coating that worked for me. I also used trustan but don't see it about so much it turned the rust on a trailer I had so smooth I was just able to paint it the next day , in fact the more rust the better it seemed to work.

More of a grime and scale cleaner Id say. Bit of a cocktail of solvents.
4 methyl 2 pentanone is miscible in water and good at removing sticky deposits photo resists, - tar? etc.
Apart from formic acid which is excellent for de scaling, I cant begin to guess what the other solvents or the whole mix will do. Not a lot for removing rust I would hazard a guess.

More snake oil, put it in a small bottle cover it with pseudo scientific terms and away you go, some one will buy.
Not forgetting to charge plenty after all theres many who still believe "you always get what you pay for".
I know some one very well who makes an easy living decanting things into small containers.
Theres also a man who used to sell sachets of soapy water to the Gas Board "Leak Detector".

As an after thought Ants stings contain Formic Acid, so as an experiment maybe a rusty bolt in an ants nest ?
Or park your Mercedes over one ?

formic stinks to high heaven, very pungent. It also stings like hell if you get any on your hands in a cut say and quite expensive.
A large labour force needed to milk all those ants. hehe
But there's no telling what the whole mix will do. There could be reactions that do something to oxidise the rust or convert it to something that will dissolve or become less active.
Another suggestion I thought of thats good but messy. Once the rust has been removed or neutralised is to paint everywhere with good ol'tar paint. I did a 4x4 chassis once with tar based roofing paint. Very cheap and surprisingly good.

The trouble with most rubbery coatings is the should any become loose, then water can get trapped in, more or less like the days of underseal, wax oil must still be one of the best things

In the olden days my father got us to paint below cars and lots more besides with his old engine oil this was done every spring.

Used to dread those words that's a good day have you got a hr to spare he said with a drum of black oil and a paintbrush in his hand.
Hated it then ,,, but wish I could turn the clock back now.

That is not considered a good thing to do these days as the oil contains carbon and metal particles, it can promote rust

Tar (roofing paint) stays black and sticky.Thats why its used on roofs.
Unlike rubber coatings.

The citric stuff appears to be working well.

To assist the process I built a large 5' machine to agitate the jar every so often.

It therefore came as a surprise that said machine actually runs on beer! Just add more beer to increase the speed of agitation, quite remarkable really.

This is after two weeks of soaking in a citric solution of one table spoon.
